Hi everyone I hope you're enjoying a beautiful Friday evening. I'm enjoying the beautiful weather here in Hawaii. In my luxurious hotel overseeing the ocean eating the Paleo/Primal way.
OK let me slap myself back into reality. I'm at the GYM putting the finishing touches on what's sure to be an ass-kicker workout tomorrow. Yes, that's right fine I said it! It's an ass kicker!
I have so much to post but don't want to overwhelm everyone. So first and foremost I hope everyone had an awesome weekend. If you didn't then change your mindset and begin on making it better right now. We all have our moments. We all have our battles. The one thing we all have in common is that we can all change our mindset and be more positive about life in general. Find 1 beautiful thing that has happened this week and embrace it.
A wonderful thing happened to me today. It's going to sound crazy, so prepare yourself. Ready........
Well my back sort of went out on me again. First thoughts oh no, CRAP! WTF, not now. Here's the beauty. It made me rethink how to teach class without hurting myself or putting my back in more pain. Off to the drawing board, ok I cheated a bit and dusted off a book to read. The book "Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training" by Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore. It's a back to basics no frills book on basic lifts. This sparked me to change the format of class and just focus on the big 4 lifts. Class was great, all of us were tired at the end and we all partook in a great workout. Here's the best part. My back feels great. Still a little tight but a few more stretches and a little bit of time and the proper lifts and I'll be good as new. That's my positive in a negative situation. I know I wish all negatives were that simple. Try it and you might just surprise yourself.
This all leads me back to an article in Men's Journal November 2010 copied directly from Men's Journal website:
From Daniel Duane’s Everything You Know About Fitness is a Lie
I hate the gym. At least, I hate “the gym” as imagined by the modern American health club: the mindless repetitions on the weight machines, half-hearted crunches, daytime TV during the treadmill. Such a sad, unimaginative excuse for a life, when I could be out rock-climbing, surfing, or, hell, even just scrubbing the bathroom floor. But I love working out the way I’ve come to understand it, and two big discoveries made all the difference.
First, I realized that we all live in a kind of Fitness Fog, a miasma of lies and misinformation that we mistake for common sense, and that makes most of our gym time a complete waste. Second, and by far the bigger news, I finally figured out what gyms are good for and exactly how a man can use them to make himself healthy and fit in the truest sense: strong, capable, and durable in the long-lasting way that doesn’t just ward off chronic disease but actually lets a 35-year-old desk drone carry both of his laughing children up a mountain, simultaneously, and take on serious skiing at age 40, trusting his knees to bend deep and firm.
For the rest of the lies (and exercises that actually work) check out MJ’s November 2010 issue.
It was a very good article with very valuable information. If and when you have a chance give it a once over.
Till tomorrow's challenge and or workout
One last thought for tonight. Whatever your beliefs or stance say a prayer for all our soldiers over-seas putting themselves in harms way so that we don't have to.
So to all my brothers and sisters serving in the armed forces God Speed and Semper Fi!
